The Bull.

A Spanish fighting bull caught at the moment of the charge: head lowered, tail raised, every muscle set. Painted in acrylic and finished in 24-carat gold leaf on a ground of Musou Black, an acrylic its maker rates at 99.4% visible-light absorption, so the bull appears to stand out of the darkness rather than sit on the canvas.

In the room

Gold that answers
the light.

The ultra-black ground swallows almost everything that falls on it. The gold leaf does the opposite, so as the light in a room changes through the day, the bull changes with it. Under a single wall light it reads almost as a sculpture.

When lit from behind, the black holds the light back and the glow comes through the bull alone, which makes it as strong a piece after dark as it is by day.

It is a work for a particular kind of collector: those who love Spain and its oldest symbol, those who love animals painted with real anatomy and force, and those whose interest in the fighting bull comes by way of the motoring world.
